How We Helped Power Linamar's Roctel Manufacturing

Linamar Corporation is an advanced manufacturing company with leading-edge technology and deep manufacturing expertise in creating solutions that power vehicles, motion, work and lives for the future.

Client:

Roctel

Completion:

2020

Project Type:

CHP Power generation provided by 2 x 1.5MW Caterpillar generator sets

Project Overview

ProPhase completed a grid-isolated project for Roctel in Guelph, Ontario.  Roctel Manufacturing is a division of Linamar, and manufactures parts for the automotive industry in an environmentally responsible manners.

This energy project can transition between grid supply and utility supply to take advantage of Global Adjustment rates and displaces load from the grid at peak times by switching to on-site natural gas generation power supply.   The facility is 127,888 sq. ft. and carries the ISO 450001 and ISO 140001 certifications.

Two Caterpillar 1.5MW containerized generator sets were installed.

How we helped Roctel achieve its goals

The project interfaces with the utility since metering regulations in Ontario require the generation be revenue metered for Gross Load Billing (GLB).   Additionally, SCADA interface to the utility allows the utility to observe when the facility is “islanded” from the grid, as well as facility generation and load data.

Successfully navigating every step

Conducting site visits

Identifying specific needs for communication and data systems, electrical installations, power generation, and building automation systems.

Holding planning sessions with Roctel

Making sure project managers and key stakeholders align on project goals, timelines, and expectations.

Deploying specialized teams

For each aspect of the project, ProPhase’s team consisted of experts in their respective fields to ensure high-quality work.

Implementing rigorous safety protocols

Maintaining a clean safety record and ensuring the wellbeing of all workers and Roctel’s employees.

Scheduling work during off-hours

By scheduling during nighttime and off-hours, ProPhase reduces any impact on Roctel’s operations and customer experience.

The main challenges that Roctel faced

Our 4 challenges faced during the project include:

Coordination and Integration

Synchronizing the installation and integration of communication and data systems, electrical systems, power generation, and building automation systems across multiple locations.

Minimizing Disruption

Ensuring that the installations and upgrades did not disrupt Roctel’s daily operations and customer experience.

Efficiency and Safety

Maintaining high standards of safety and efficiency throughout the project to meet Roctel’s operational and regulatory requirements.

Timely Completion

Adhering to strict project timelines to ensure that each store was operational as per the schedule.

How we solved the main challenges for Target

Communication and Data Systems

ProPhase installed robust communication and data infrastructure, ensuring reliable connectivity and data flow across the store locations. This included fiber optic cabling, network setup, and data center installations.

Electrical Installations

Comprehensive electrical systems were installed, including lighting, power distribution, and emergency power systems. ProPhase’s attention to detail ensured that all installations met Target’s high standards for safety and reliability.

Power Generation

Energy-efficient cogeneration systems were implemented to provide stable and cost-effective power. These systems not only reduced energy costs but also contributed to a lower carbon footprint, aligning with Target’s sustainability goals.

Building Automation Systems

Advanced building automation systems were installed to optimize energy usage, enhance security, and improve overall operational efficiency. These systems provided real-time monitoring and control over various building functions.

Helping Roctel Achieve Energy Efficiency

We partnered with Roctel to install a cogeneration system that provided reliable energy at a reduced cost while reducing emissions into the atmosphere.

Results of our efforts for Roctel

The integration of advanced communication and data systems streamlined operations, reducing downtime and enhancing overall efficiency.

The cogeneration systems significantly reduced energy costs, providing a stable power supply and supporting Roctel’s sustainability initiatives.

ProPhase’s meticulous approach to electrical installations ensured a reliable and safe power infrastructure, minimizing the risk of outages and accidents.

The cogeneration system provided Roctel with reliable, stable power to their facilities, resulting in better energy management and security.

Testing and handover

Before concluding the project, ProPhase ensures that all systems are fully operational and meet the client’s expectations:

Comprehensive Testing

Performing extensive testing of all systems to ensure they function correctly and efficiently.

Client Training

Offering training sessions for Roctel’s staff to ensure they are well-versed in operating and maintaining the new systems.

Final Review and Handover

Conducting a final review with Roctel’s management to confirm satisfaction and officially hand over the project.

Post-Project Support

ProPhase’s commitment to excellence extends beyond project completion:

What our client has to say

Roctel’s management expressed high satisfaction with ProPhase’s professionalism, dedication, and quality of work. "The power plant integration was in accord with ProPhase's method of procedure, adding two 5,000 amp feeders into the building, with a total downtime of only 3-hours."
