A CHP system can achieve up to 88% efficiency, compared to just 44% for conventional systems. It operates by using an engine connected to a generator to produce both electricity and heat directly at your facility.
The generator-produced electricity feeds directly into the facility’s electrical panel, while maintaining a connection to both the CHP system and the hydro grid. Heat from the engine is captured for pre-heating boilers, space heating, or steam creation. CHP can also supplement emergency generators, providing extra lighting, appliance support, and elevator use during outages.
As the world moves toward reducing their carbon output, CHP engines—currently powered primarily by natural gas—can operate on a natural gas and hydrogen blend. With wider availability of hydrogen, these engines can be upgraded to run entirely on hydrogen, achieving a zero-carbon footprint.
